First Email Engagement Outreach

Dear (name),

I am a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) at (insert agency name), and my role is to advocate for the best interests of children in the foster care system. We have identified you as a potential relative of (child’s name), child of (mother’s name) and (father’s name), who was born on (child’s DOB). (Child’s name) is now in the custody of (social services municipality). Children are removed from their homes, typically, due to either abuse or neglect. Sadly, this is the case for (child’s name).

[[if sent letter]] I’ve sent a letter to (address here) but haven’t received any response.

It is my role in the agency to reach out to the relatives of our foster children. Relatives of foster children often play an essential role in the lives of these children and can make an enormous impact on their lives. Children are most likely to thrive when connected or placed in homes with relatives and/or connections because, often, relationships have already been forged and can improve stability. Foster children who are able to stay connected to their extended families and cultures are subject to less trauma than those who are not connected to their families. I am reaching out to see if you might be willing to explore ways to assist (child’s name).

There are many ways that relatives can impact the lives of foster children. Some serve as a permanent or temporary home placement, some offer to help connect (social services municipality) with other potential relatives, and some simply keep in touch with the child. Examples of ways to keep in touch with the child are: in-person visits, phone calls, letter-writing, attending school events, and providing family history. I’d be happy to explore which option may be the best fit for you and your family. Take a moment to imagine your life without a family member to call about a recipe, or if you had no one from your family at your graduation or wedding.

If you feel you might be interested in exploring possible placement of (child’s name) we can discuss assistance that you might qualify for, such as medical, food, and college tuition.

I’d be happy to help answer any questions you may have. Please let me know if you’re able to help at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

(Name)
